Tour Overview

Discover the Jewel of Southern Oman

Escape to the tropical paradise of Salalah, the capital of Oman’s Dhofar Governorate, where pristine white-sand beaches, dramatic mountain ranges, lush valleys, ancient archaeological treasures, and the legendary Frankincense Trail create one of the Middle East’s most unique holiday destinations. Unlike the rest of Oman, Salalah offers a completely different landscape, especially during the famous Khareef season (June to September) when monsoon rains transform the region into a lush green oasis with flowing waterfalls and mist-covered mountains.

This carefully designed 5-day journey combines the region’s spectacular coastline, UNESCO World Heritage Sites, breathtaking mountains, traditional villages, vast desert landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. From exploring the ancient frankincense ports to experiencing the towering dunes of the Empty Quarter and relaxing in the comfort of your hotel, this itinerary offers the perfect balance of sightseeing, adventure, and leisure.

  • After breakfast, set out on a full-day journey exploring the highlights of both the eastern and western regions of Dhofar.

Your first stop is the charming fishing town of Taqah, where you’ll visit the beautifully restored Taqah Castle, once the residence of the local governor. The castle offers fascinating insight into traditional Omani architecture and the lifestyle of Dhofar’s ruling families.

Continue to the nearby Sumhuram Archaeological Park (Khor Rori), a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was once one of the most important trading ports for the export of frankincense. Walk among the ancient ruins while enjoying magnificent views across the tranquil lagoon, home to numerous migratory birds.

The journey continues to the breathtaking Wadi Darbat, one of Salalah’s most picturesque natural attractions. During the Khareef season, the valley comes alive with flowing waterfalls, emerald-green hills, and grazing camels. Outside the monsoon season, visitors can still enjoy its peaceful lakes, dramatic limestone cliffs, and scenic walking areas.

After lunch, travel west towards the spectacular coastline to visit Al Mughsail Beach, famous for its powdery white sands stretching alongside the turquoise waters of the Arabian Sea. Nearby, discover the impressive Marneef Cave and witness the powerful natural blowholes, where seawater shoots high into the air as waves crash beneath the cliffs.

The scenic drive offers breathtaking coastal and mountain views before returning to Salalah in the evening.

    Overnight: Salalah
    Meals: Breakfast

  • Following breakfast, prepare for an unforgettable journey into one of the world’s largest sand deserts—the legendary Rub’ al Khali (Empty Quarter).

Travelling by 4WD, leave the green landscapes of Salalah behind as the scenery gradually changes into vast golden sand dunes stretching endlessly across the horizon. Along the way, your guide will explain the history of the ancient Bedouin tribes who have lived in this harsh yet beautiful environment for centuries.

Experience exciting dune driving across towering sand dunes while stopping at panoramic viewpoints that offer spectacular photo opportunities. Visit traditional Bedouin camps where you can learn about desert life, enjoy authentic Omani hospitality, and sample Arabic coffee with fresh dates.

Take time to admire the silence and beauty of the Empty Quarter before watching the magical colours of the desert change as the afternoon sun casts golden and orange hues across the dunes. Optional camel rides can also be arranged for those wishing to experience traditional desert transport.

After an unforgettable desert adventure, return to Salalah for a relaxing evening at your hotel.

Your guide will explain the importance of frankincense in Oman’s history and why Dhofar has been famous for its production for thousands of years.

Drive through the region’s famous coconut, banana, and papaya plantations, a unique feature that makes Salalah unlike anywhere else on the Arabian Peninsula. Stop for a refreshing taste of fresh coconut water or locally grown tropical fruits from roadside stalls.
